Disposal Facilities
Transfer stations Residents, businesses and garbage collection contractors can bring their waste to transfer stations where it can be dropped off for a fee. All transfer stations have a green waste (yard trimmings) area, and a recycle depot nearby.
At these stations, garbage is screened for hazardous wastes and recyclable materials, then loaded into large trucks and hauled to the Cache Creek or Vancouver Landfill or the Burnaby Waste-to-Energy Facility.
Disposal rates and acceptable disposal/recycle items for each of the transfer stations are listed below. Payments can be made with cash, Interac, Visa and Mastercard. Taxes are not charged on these services. |

Cache Creek Landfill The Cache Creek landfill accepts about 500,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste annually, most of which comes from the Greater Vancouver region. This facility has been operated by Wastech Services Ltd under contract to the GVRD, and in co-operation with the Village of Cache Creek since 1989. The GVRD is exploring alternatives to replace the Cache Creek Landfill.
Waste-to-energy facility The Waste-to-Energy Facility located in Burnaby incinerates about 20 per cent of the Lower Mainland’s garbage, turning about 250,000 tonnes of garbage into 800,000 tonnes of steam (which is sold as energy to a nearby paper recycling facility)
