There’s no doubt about it, it can be more challenging for you to compost when you don’t have a back garden for your composter. However, many complexes and individuals do have composting programs. So congratulations for all that you do, and for seeking more information.
Composting for apartment and condominium residents
- Talk to your building manager or strata about the opportunity to start a composting program.
- Research what would be involved by contacting City Farmers Compost Hotline You might have to be the one to answer questions from other residents, and lead the program.
- Like with the recycling program, work out what the barriers are (containers, allocating a bin location, storing dry brown material (e.g. leaves) for layering, working with a contracted grounds maintenance crew) to having one and how can you, as residents overcome them?
- Consider a vermicomposter, more commonly called a worm bin for kitchen scraps. Residents have worm bins on balconies, roof tops and other shaded and sheltered locations in their buildings.
- Consider inviting a worm bin trainer to your building to do a lesson on worm composting.
