Coquitlam Transfer Station Replacement

Metro Vancouver is constructing a new transfer station on the former Coquitlam Landfill site (995 United Boulevard) by 2021 to replace the current Coquitlam Transfer Station one kilometre away. This new transfer station will serve the growing community and help reach our regional recycling goals of 80%. The Metro Vancouver Board approved the construction of a new transfer station to replace the existing Coquitlam Transfer Station.

It will be a full-service waste and recycling facility serving commercial, residential and small business customers. Residential and commercial vehicles will be segregated to improve traffic flows and safety. A large free recycling area is also included in the design. The facility will be open 363 days a year, serving about 200,000 customers.

Project Timeline

In 2015-2016, Metro Vancouver conducted preliminary work including concept designs, geotechnical work, and odour and traffic assessments. In 2017 Metro Vancouver developed a detailed facility design considering input from municipal and commercial transfer station users.  Construction is progressing and the transfer station will open in Spring 2021.

Public Engagement and Consultation

Metro Vancouver is committed to engaging neighbouring businesses and interested residents to ensure the facility fits in with the community, and to maximize benefits for transfer station users. As part of this commitment, Metro Vancouver will engage with interested parties throughout the project.

Previous Meetings

On February 15, 2018, Metro Vancouver hosted an open house for neighbouring businesses, interested residents, transfer station users and municipalities to learn more about the project, facility design and construction timeline. Feedback from the open house was summarized and provided to the City of Coquitlam as part of the development permit approval process.
