Project Overview

Diverting flows from Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows to the Northwest Langley Wastewater Treatment Plant requires two new sewer pipes. Two pipes will extend from the new pump station in Maple Ridge, under the Fraser River, to the treatment plant. The alignment will run parallel to the Golden Ears Bridge. The crossing will be carried out using horizontal directional drilling (drilling a tunnel under the riverbed) to avoid impacts to the river.

Work has been planned in consultation with Fraser River users and permitting agencies to minimize impacts to river activity and the river itself. Metro Vancouver is committed to minimizing the impacts of this project on the marine environment and surrounding habitat.

Project Update

  • UPCOMING CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITIES & WORK HOURS - posted on May 10, 2022

    Fraser River Crossing
As you may know, construction on the Fraser River Crossing Project began in November 2021. With preparatory work now complete, crews are ready to begin the main construction activities.

    Update on Extended Working Hours
While the majority of construction will take place between 7:00 am and 8:00 pm, some activities require continuous operations to ensure safety and reduce technical challenges. Starting in May 2022, HDD, trenchless crossing and pipe assembly activities will require work to take place 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Wherever possible, the contractor will limit noisier activities to daytime hours. Please note that recent work involving casing installation may have generated some noise for the community; the majority of this work is now complete, thank you for your patience.

All work will comply with granted municipal bylaw variances.  The contractor will monitor noise levels and implement mitigation measures, such as temporary noise barriers, where required.

    Current Construction Activities
Through to the end of 2022, activities for the Fraser River Crossing project will include:
Horizontal directional drilling (HDD) – installing two new sewer pipes under the river which requires 24 hours a day, seven days a week operation. Sound generated from equipment may increase noise levels around each work area.

Trenchless crossing – installing a pipe connection under the existing roadway. This includes sheet piling, concrete pours, tunnelling and pipe installation. Noisier activities, such as sheet piling, will occur between 7 am to 8 pm, seven days a week. Extended hours are required for the remaining activities.

Pipe storage and assembly – preparing and assembling the pipe that will go under the Fraser River. Assembly will take place 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Generators used for welding will be positioned away from residential areas.

Final work activities, including open-cut construction and restoration, will follow, with the project anticipated to be complete in spring 2023.

    Pump Station and Storage Tank
Construction at the Golden Ears Pump Station and Storage Tank is ongoing. Current construction activities include concrete placement, piping installation and equipment installation. Hours of work are from 7 am to 8 pm, Monday to Saturday. Construction will continue through the end of 2022.
