Jervis Forcemain No. 2

Metro Vancouver recently completed a major infrastructure project in Vancouver involving the installation of a new sewer main called Jervis Forcemain No. 2. This new sewer main will soon be carrying wastewater from the West End and most of downtown Vancouver to the Iona Island Wastewater Treatment Plant in Richmond. The new sewer main will also provide enhanced environmental protection for Burrard Inlet.

Project history

Construction for this project began in 2006, with work being carried out in four sections. The project involved pipe installation at Sunset Beach, underneath False Creek, across Vanier Park and down to West 4th Avenue, and finally in a tunnel underneath Pine Street.

Upcoming activities

Crews will continue to visit the site occasionally in order to complete minor activities, such as monitoring of the new sewer main. This work is not expected to have major impacts to nearby residents and businesses.

Thank you

We would like to thank everyone affected by the Jervis Forcemain No. 2 project. Metro Vancouver values and appreciates your input, participation and patience during the construction process.

Fast Facts

Each year, 435 billion litres of wastewater are treated in the five Lower Mainland wastewater treatment plants. That’s enough to fill BC Place stadium more than 180 times.

There are over 500 kilometres of Metro Vancouver sewer mains. That’s about the driving distance from Vancouver, British Columbia to Portland, Oregon!
