Jervis Forcemain No. 2

Project Update: February 4, 2010
Metro Vancouver, working in cooperation with the City of Vancouver and the Vancouver Park Board, has been constructing a new sewer main, called Jervis Forcemain No. 2. Pipe installation work for the Sunset Beach Section and the W. 4th Avenue to Vanier Park Section is now complete, and crews have also tested the new main successfully.

Once in service, Jervis Forcemain No. 2 will provide improved environmental protection for Burrard Inlet, and operational reliability for Metro Vancouver’s wastewater system.

Sunset Beach Section
Metro Vancouver’s contractor, Merletti Construction Ltd., has completed construction-related activities in the Sunset Beach area and will be conducting the following upcoming restoration activities:

  • All site trailers have been removed from the construction site;
  • Prior to the 2010 Olympic Winter Games, crews will complete the handrail installation on the new path near the pump station, the installation of granite masonry blocks on the face of the pump station’s south wall, and cleanup activities in the area;
  • Metro Vancouver will leave the playing field bare (no grass) until the Vancouver Park Board begins its reconstruction work on the field, which is expected to begin in early spring 2010. This reconstruction work in the playing field area is unrelated to the Jervis Forcemain No. 2 project;
  • Safety fencing will remain around the pump station and playing field during the winter due to muddy conditions. This fencing will remain until the Vancouver Park Board begins its work in spring 2010 (see above); and
  • Metro Vancouver crews will hydroseed the grass area around the pump station and stairs in early spring 2010. Hydroseeding is a planting process that involves spraying a solution of grass seed and mulch, and is expected to take one-to-two days to complete. Hydroseeding activities are not expected to have significant impacts on local residents.

W. 4th Avenue to Vanier Park Section
Metro Vancouver’s contractor, Pedre Contractors Ltd., has completed construction-related activities in the W. 4th Avenue to Vanier Park area and will be conducting the following upcoming restoration activities:

  • All equipment and safety fencing has been removed from Vanier Park and Seaforth Park;
  • Topsoil placement and cleanup activities have been completed in Vanier Park and Seaforth Park. Hydroseeding will occur at Seaforth Park and at the north end of Vanier Park in spring 2010;
  • Road restoration activities on Chestnut Street:
    • The sidewalk at Chestnut Street and Ogden Avenue leading to the Vancouver Maritime Museum will be restored in spring 2010;
    • Curb bulges at Chestnut Street and Greer Avenue will be restored in spring 2010;
    • Base lift (bottom layer) of pavement has been placed on Chestnut Street between Cornwall Avenue and Ogden Avenue;
    • Top lift (final layer) of pavement has been placed on Chestnut Street between Cornwall Avenue and Greer Avenue. Crews will return to permanently restore the road surface between Greer Avenue and Ogden Avenue with top lift pavement in spring 2010, and additional information will be provided at that time;

Pedestrian access

Most sidewalks and walkways along the pipe route are restored with the exception of a few small areas. These areas will either be temporarily surfaced with gravel, or safety barriers will be installed. Crews will return in the spring to complete permanent restoration of these areas.

Pine Street Section
Construction on the Pine Street Section of the Jervis Forcemain No. 2 project, between W. 4th Avenue and W. 8th Avenue, will begin shortly after the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

Fast Facts

Each year, 435 billion litres of wastewater are treated in the five Lower Mainland wastewater treatment plants. That’s enough to fill BC Place stadium more than 180 times.

There are over 500 kilometres of Metro Vancouver sewer mains. That’s about the driving distance from Vancouver, British Columbia to Portland, Oregon!
