New Douglas Road Sewer to accommodate growthNew Douglas Road Sewer to accommodate growth<div class="ExternalClassA5310CD95C0B467E80B25C1A9D01301A"><p>​Metro Vancouver is building a new Douglas Road Sewer to accommodate the growing population in the City of Burnaby and ensure continued protection of public health and the environment.</p><p>The new sewer will complement the Hastings Sanitary Trunk Sewer, which no longer has sufficient capacity to meet Burnaby’s future needs. </p><p>The Douglas Road Sewer, which will be 1.8 km long and run along Douglas Road and Halifax Street between Boundary Road and Willingdon Avenue, will receive flows from the developing Brentwood and Gilmore neighbourhoods and increase the amount of wastewater the system can handle. The new sewer will allow liquid waste to continue to be safely and effectively treated at the Iona plant.</p><p>The pipe will be installed by both tunneling and trenched methods – the tunneled sections (approximately one kilometre) will require the construction of five tunnel shafts along Douglas Road. A tunnel boring machine will be used, followed by the installation of the plastic-lined concrete pipe. </p><p>Metro Vancouver is working closely with residents and businesses along the route to minimize impacts and will continue to work with the City of Burnaby to ensure safe and effective traffic management. The work will also be coordinated with other major utility and residential development construction projects in the area.</p><p>The work was started in October and is expected to take 18 months to complete.
