Iona Island Waste Water Treatment Plant – Solids Handling UpgradesIona Island Waste Water Treatment Plant – Solids Handling Upgrades

Metro Vancouver collects and treats the region's wastewater with a network of sewers, pumping stations and five wastewater treatment plants, the goal of which is to protect the ecological and public health.

Three of the treatment plants use secondary treatment, where the other two use primary treatment. One of these is the Iona Island Waste Water Treatment plant, located in Richmond just north of the Vancouver International Airport. Many people cycle nearby on the Iona Jetty.

The 52 year old Iona Island Waste Water Treatment Plant provides liquid waste treatment to most of Vancouver, the University Endowment Lands, and a small portion of Burnaby and Richmond. It is scheduled for an upgrade to secondary treatment by 2030. In order to meet regulatory permit requirements until 2030, the plant needs some improvements.

Each facility has unique attributes in design, inflows and how it is operated. This plant is susceptible to heavy loads of grit and debris, which drains off the roads from its catchment area into the combined (sanitary and storm) sewer system.

The current upgrade consists of:

a new two-storey building with sludge screens, degritters and odour control facilities, to remove sand and debris,

refurbishing the existing gravity thickeners, and adding a third, which will improve the removal of organic material in the digesters, and

replacing the existing gas mixing system with new jet mixing pumped systems, which will improve the performance of all four digesters, increasing the plant’s solid handling capacity and digester gas production to generate electricity and heat for the plant.

Construction started in autumn of 2014 and will be complete in early 2019. This fall saw the start of the new building.
