Highbury Diversion Chamber MaintenanceHighbury Diversion Chamber Maintenance

In addition to upgrades at the Iona Island Wastewater Treatment plant, also in this edition, one of Metro Vancouver’s major sewer mains, the Highbury Interceptor, has recently seen some maintenance work.

The Highbury Interceptor is a large sewer that carries over 90% of the sewage flows from the City of Vancouver and parts of Burnaby (over 600,000 residents) to the Iona Island Wastewater Treatment Plant. The Highbury Diversion Chamber divides the flows into three separate pipes that run underneath the Fraser River, just before entering the treatment plant.

Metro Vancouver just completed repairs to the chamber as part of some preventative maintenance that will improve the reliability and integrity of the infrastructure.

The chamber is located at the Fraser River, off South Marine Drive, on Musqueam Indian Reserve #2. The project was planned in partnership with Musqueam staff, who identified how construction impacts could be mitigated.

While on this work site, staff were there at the right time with equipment to move a 40 foot log nicknamed “old woman” by the community, from the foreshore onto a field. The log will be carved into a sea-going canoe as part of Awakening the Spirit, a partnership between Musqueam and UBC faculty. More information on the project can be found here.

“We appreciate all Metro’s help in moving our log from foreshore to our field. Our community is so excited to have the log, which will be used to build a sea going canoe. Again we really appreciate all your help!”
–Norman Point, Public Works Manager, Musqueam Indian Band

http://www.metrovancouver.org/metroupdate/PublishingImages/issue15-highbury.jpg2015-11-30T08:00:00ZGP0|#100994a7-ccf5-41d6-898e-bf1437a726ba;L0|#0100994a7-ccf5-41d6-898e-bf1437a726ba|Issue 15;GTSet|#d14ffe11-45dc-48fb-8684-ff109cf15a74

The Highbury Interceptor is a large sewer that carries over 90% of the sewage flows from the City of Vancouver and parts of Burnaby (over 600,000 residents) to the Iona Island Wastewater Treatment Plant.
