Disposal Facilities
Six transfer stations, a waste-to-energy facility (where waste is incinerated) and the Cache Creek Landfill and Vancouver Landfill are the main components of the disposal portion of the Metro Vancouver's Solid Waste Management Plan. Within the region there are also private solid waste facilities which handle demolition, land clearing and construction debris in addition to the public disposal facilities. |
|
Transfer stations
Residents, businesses and garbage collection contractors can bring their waste to transfer stations where it can be dropped off for a fee. All transfer stations have a green waste (yard trimmings) area and a recycle depot nearby.
At these stations, garbage is screened for hazardous wastes, prohibited, banned and recyclable materials, loaded into large trucks and hauled to the Metro Vancouver Waste-to-Energy Facility, Vancouver Landfill or Cache Creek Landfill.
Disposal rates and acceptable disposal/recyclable items for each of the transfer stations are listed below. Payments can be made with cash, VISA, MasterCard, and Debit.
- Loads not tied, tarped, covered or otherwise contained will not be permitted to enter any Metro Vancouver Transfer Station facility.
- A $50 minimum surcharge, plus the cost of removal, clean-up or remediation will be applied to loads containing prohibited materials. Surcharges of 50% of the tipping fee will be applied to loads containing banned recyclable materials.
Effective May 1, 2012 - The tipping fee for Green Waste and Clean Wood Waste at the North Shore Transfer Station will increase to $71/tonne with a $7/load minimum. See the North Shore Transfer Station rate table for further details or click here for a copy of the 2012 bylaw. |

The Matsqui waste transfer station in Abbotsford remains closed because of flooding, so residents and businesses won’t be able to drop off their garbage there.
The Metro Vancouver facility, located at 33621 Valley Road, has to shut down for at least 24 hours because both Valley Road and parts of the transfer station are covered with two to three feet of water.
The facility is not expected to reopen until the City of Abbotsford reopens Valley Road. When the facility reopens, its operating hours may need to be reduced.
Abbotsford residents can still put out garbage at the curb, for pickup on regular collection dates.

Cache Creek Landfill The Cache Creek landfill accepts about 500,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste annually, most of which comes from the Greater Vancouver region. This facility has been operated by Wastech Services Ltd under contract to the GVRD, and in co-operation with the Village of Cache Creek since 1989. The GVRD is exploring alternatives to replace the Cache Creek Landfill.
Waste-to-Energy Facility The Waste-to-Energy Facility (WTEF) is located in the commercial/industrial area of south Burnaby. It receives waste from Burnaby, New Westminster, and the North Shore and is responsible for the environmentally safe disposal of over 20 per cent of the region’s waste.
