Disposal Facilities
Transfer stations

Residents, businesses and garbage collection contractors can bring their waste to transfer stations where it can be dropped off for a fee. All transfer stations have a green waste (yard trimmings) area and a recycle depot nearby.

At these stations, garbage is screened for hazardous wastes and recyclable materials, loaded into large trucks and hauled to the Cache Creek or Vancouver Landfill, or the Metro Vancouver Waste-to-Energy Facility.

Disposal rates and acceptable disposal/recyclable items for each of the transfer stations are listed below. Payments can be made with cash, VISA, MasterCard, and Debit.

  • Loads not tied, tarped, covered or otherwise contained will not be permitted to enter any Metro Vancouver Transfer Station facility.
  • A $50 minimum surcharge, plus the cost of removal, clean-up or remediation will be applied to loads containing prohibited materials. Surcharges of 50% of the tipping fee will be applied to loads containing banned recyclable materials.

‭(Hidden)‬ Matsqui Transfer Station Closed due to flooding

The Matsqui waste transfer station in Abbotsford remains closed because of flooding, so residents and businesses won’t be able to drop off their garbage there.

The Metro Vancouver facility, located at 33621 Valley Road, has to shut down for at least 24 hours because both Valley Road and parts of the transfer station are covered with two to three feet of water.

The facility is not expected to reopen until the City of Abbotsford reopens Valley Road. When the facility reopens, its operating hours may need to be reduced.

Abbotsford residents can still put out garbage at the curb, for pickup on regular collection dates.

North Shore Transfer Station Overflow Lot
Opening June 28, 2010
The North Shore Transfer Station (NSTS), operated by Wastech Services Ltd., has been serving customers in the Lower Mainland since 1988. Over the years, the facility has seen an increase in usage resulting in higher volumes of traffic, longer line-ups on the neighbouring municipal streets and a need for on-site traffic control personnel.

To help alleviate these issues and restore access to local businesses in the area, Metro Vancouver has constructed a traffic overflow lot adjacent to the NSTS at 30 Riverside Drive. This new lot will be operational during peak traffic hours and can hold up to 70 vehicles in queue at one time. As a result of this, the number of traffic control personnel stationed around the NSTS will decrease as customers become familiar with the new traffic patterns on Riverside Drive.

 City of Vancouver operated facilities

Vancouver Landfill - 5400 72nd Street, Delta
Vancouver Transfer Station - 377 West Kent Avenue North, Vancouver
Cache Creek Landfill
The Cache Creek landfill accepts about 500,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste annually, most of which comes from the Greater Vancouver region. This facility has been operated by Wastech Services Ltd under contract to the GVRD, and in co-operation with the Village of Cache Creek since 1989. The GVRD is exploring alternatives to replace the Cache Creek Landfill.

Waste-to-energy facility
The Waste-to-Energy Facility (WTEF) is located in the commercial/industrial area of south Burnaby. It receives waste from Burnaby, New Westminster, and the North Shore and is responsible for the environmentally safe disposal of over 20 per cent of the region’s waste.
Commercial Accounts
Businesses can apply for credit accounts at Metro Vancouver's Solid Waste Disposal Facilities. This can speed up processing time and provide businesses with one convenient monthly bill. An account application for and vehicle registration form are required to be completed.

 Private solid waste facilities

Private businesses are a part of the region’s solid waste handling process. Disposal businesses are involved in everything from storage and transfer of waste to material recovery and composting.
