Central Park Water Main – Maywood SectionCentral Park Water Main – Maywood Section<div class="ExternalClassD281B5DE80F946D9BF1DD384297AF6EA"><p>Metro Vancouver is planning to replace the existing aged Central Park Water Main with a new water main, which will be constructed from Maywood Street at Patterson Avenue and will extend east for seven kilometres in the City of Burnaby. The existing water main was built in the 1930s and has reached the end of its service life. Construction of this new main has been phased over several years due to its length and will be constructed in three sections along the route. </p><p>The first section, known as the Maywood Section, will start at Patterson Avenue and end at the intersection of Telford Avenue and Maywood Street. This section is approximately 500 metres long and construction will take place from fall 2019 to fall 2020.</p><p>The second section for this project is the <a href="/services/water/engagement/construction-projects/Pages/Central-Park-Water-Main-Salisbury-18th-Section.aspx" target="_blank">Central Park Water Main – Salisbury/ 18th Section</a>, this section starts at Elwell Street and heads south to 10th Avenue in the City of Burnaby. This section is approximately three kilometres long and construction will take place from fall 2020 to summer 2022. </p><p>When the entire Central Park Water Main is complete in 2023, the new main will help ensure the continued delivery of clean, safe drinking water to the City of Burnaby and other parts of the region well into the future. </p></div>City of Burnaby

Project Update

  • Final Construction Activities - posted on October 28, 2020

    ​Metro Vancouver's contractor will conduct final construction activities including street paving, cleaning and restoration of the landscaped areas that were disturbed by construction. There will be single-lane alternating traffic along Maywood Street to complete this work. In addition, a full closure along Maywood Street between Willingdon Avenue and Cassie Avenue will be in place for up to two days. Please follow diretional signage and traffic control personnel on site.

    Following these activities, Metro Vancouver crews will take over the prject to perform disinfection and tie-in connection work of the newly installed water main to the existing system. Work will take place at either end of the Maywood Section alignment at Maywood Street and Telford Avenue and at Patterson Avenue. Crews are scheduled to begin work in late October 2020 and be completed by the end of the year.

    The second phase of this project will begin construction in fall 2020 until summer 2022. The third and final phase of this project known as the Imperial Section is planned for fall 2021 until winter 2023 (please see map at left for alignment route).

<div class="ExternalClass3A81E61BB4024E459A34962F923DEC81"><p>​Activities related to water main construction will include delivering equipment, steel pipe, gravel and other materials; cutting pavement, excavating a trench, installing the pipe, welding and coating the pipe joints, backfilling the trench and compacting gravel. </p><p>Equipment associated with these activities will include asphalt saws, excavators, large trucks, dewatering pumps (equipment that is used to remove water from the construction trench), generators and compactors. Following construction, the sections of roadway impacted by construction will be paved and the affected areas nearby will be restored to similar or better condition.</p> </div><div class="ExternalClassD780487507BD413F91BEC0D7E76C76B1"><p>There may be times when access to residential driveways and parking areas will be restricted due to construction work. Residents will be notified of access restrictions in advance and alternative parking areas. Please follow the direction of signage and detour route signs and use caution when walking, cycling or driving near the construction area.</p></div><div class="ExternalClass23E5C99A894D464B8C090D7A86E25C39"><p>Typical Hours of Work are Monday to Friday from 7 AM to 8 PM and Saturday from 9 AM to 8 PM. There may be times when crews will need to work longer hours or on weekends to complete certain tasks.</p> <p>There will be some noise associated with the construction work. Crews will attempt, wherever practical, to reduce noise impacts to nearby residents and businesses. All work with comply with City of Burnaby noise bylaws granted bylaw variances. </p></div>
