About Sensitive Ecosystems

Sensitive ecosystems are often the remnants of the natural ecosystems that once occupied a much larger area and are increasingly important as human activities change the landscape. They are rare, ecologically fragile, or at-risk ecosystems.

Ecosystems in our region

Each subregion plays an important role in maintaining the ecological health of Metro Vancouver. Our region has a range on different types of ecosystems, from wetlands on the South Shore to forested slopes and rushing waters on the North Shore.

Information is available for each subregion, including the number of sensitive ecosystems in each area, the quality of these ecosystems and the area’s ecological contribution to the region.
