In order to accommodate future growth in the City of Burnaby, and to ensure continued protection of public health and the environment, this sewer pipe needs to be replaced with a new, larger pipe. It will be approximately 3.2 kilometers long and will be installed by open trench and tunneling methods (see map for project location).

Crews will begin trench construction for Phase 1 of the project, extending from Lougheed Highway to south of Greenwood Street, in late Spring 2020. Construction of Phase 2, using tunneling methods, is anticipated to begin in Spring 2021. Construction of this project will take approximately two and a half years to complete.

Winston Street, from Lougheed Highway to east of Piper Avenue, City of Burnaby

Project Update

  • TRAFFIC PATTERN CHANGES ON WINSTON STREET - AUGUST 2020 to SPRING 2021 - posted on August 06, 2020

Construction Progressing North on Winston Street

Starting in mid-August, construction on Winston Street will move north of the Greenwood Street intersection. Crews will be completing work in sections, generally progressing north within the work zone up Winston Street and the Winston Slip Road. See map to the left for details. Local businesses will remain open during construction.

    Upcoming Traffic Pattern Changes

From mid-August 2020 until spring 2021, there will changes to the traffic patterns on Winston Street from Lougheed Highway to Bainbridge Avenue. The Winston Slip Road will be fully closed for the duration, so there will be no right hand turns onto Winston Street from Lougheed Highway eastbound. Traffic will also be southbound only on Winston Street from south of the Sperling SkyTrain Station to Bainbridge Avenue for several months. A temporary detour along Bainbridge Avenue will be in place to provide an alternate access route (see map to the left).

Please expect delays and follow signage and the direction of traffic control personnel.

There may be temporary changes to bus service on the 110 bus route for the duration of construction. Please visit Translink at www.alerts.translink.ca or call 604-953-3333 for updates on service.

    Work Hours

Work will generally occur from Monday to Friday between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. There may be occasions when crews will be required to work outside of these hours to complete specific tasks and/or to stay on schedule. All work will comply with City of Burnaby bylaws or granted bylaw variances.
