As the population continues to grow and neighbourhoods become denser, Metro Vancouver is taking steps to address odour by constructing a series of air management facilities. There are three facilities planned along this pipe route that will treat and significantly reduce odour. These facilities will also reduce corrosion and extend the service life of the sewer system.

Why Do Sewers Smell?
Odour produced in sewers is common and from the natural decomposition of organic matter.

How Will the Air Management Facilities Treat These Odours?
The facilities will be designed to minimize or eliminate odours, using biological treatment and activated carbon (charcoal) to scrub the air. Activated carbon is a natural product, is completely biodegradable and is used in home air filters. Once air is treated inside the facility and stripped of odour, it is dispersed through the vent stack. It is unlikely that residents will be able to detect any odour from this facility.

Metro Vancouver staff will monitor these facilities throughout the year to ensure smooth and quiet operation.

City of Surrey
