Technology upgrades improve Metro Vancouver solid waste facilitiesTechnology upgrades improve Metro Vancouver solid waste facilities<div class="ExternalClass99D4D6B096814AA49B1A3908A408045F"><p>Metro Vancouver has improved service delivery and customer experience at its solid waste facilities thanks to recent technology upgrades.</p><p>Weigh scale systems at regional solid waste facilities were upgraded last year to include electronic signature pads for account customers. The signature pads allow account customers to electronically authorize account use in the same way couriers collect signatures for packages. The project has reduced the number of weigh scale tickets printed by more than 500,000 per year and has improved the efficiency of the program and its administration.</p><p>In early 2019, Metro Vancouver also upgraded its disposal ban program through automation. Under the program, customers are issued surcharges if garbage loads dropped off at Metro Vancouver solid waste facilities exceed thresholds for recyclables or other unacceptable materials.</p><p>Previously, disposal ban inspectors issued hand-written notices and provided photos of offending loads only on request. Now inspectors send electronic notices and photos to account customers in real time, eliminating the hand-written paper surcharge notices. The program has had additional benefits through improved inspection record keeping and increased productivity of inspectors by speeding up the inspection process.</p><p>The program launched in February at the North Shore Transfer Station and will roll out to the other Metro Vancouver solid waste facilities later this year.
