First Narrows Crossing valve chamber improvementsFirst Narrows Crossing valve chamber improvements

Metro Vancouver has begun critical maintenance of the First Narrows Crossing’s north valve chamber. This chamber houses underground pipe connections and large valves that control the flow of water from two water mains on the north shore to a tunnel carrying water under Burrard Inlet.

The First Narrows Crossing is one of several major marine crossings connecting Metro Vancouver’s source water reservoirs to communities across the region. The crossing, located just east of the Lions Gate Bridge, conveys roughly one third of the region’s drinking water and has been in service for nearly 90 years.

This work is part of planned maintenance to ensure the reliable delivery of clean, safe drinking water. In preparation, an isolation test was conducted on the First Narrows Crossing in January this year. This required coordination with member jurisdictions and agencies – specifically the City of Vancouver, District of North Vancouver, District of West Vancouver, Squamish Nation, University Endowment Lands and Vancouver Coastal Health – to stop the water flow across the First Narrows Crossing while maintaining the local water supply.

The isolation test was necessary to ensure crews could conduct the improvements safely. During the test, water continued to be delivered to all areas through an alternate distribution route via the Second Narrows Crossings. The last time this crossing was isolated was in the 1980s, when repairs were done to the tunnel’s north shaft.

The first phase of maintenance was completed this winter, and next year’s second phase, to replace the valves, will also be conducted in winter months, when water demand is lowest.

Improvements will continue to be made on the First Narrows Crossing through 2020 when the valves are replaced.

http://www.metrovancouver.org/metroupdate/PublishingImages/issue52-firstnarrows.jpg2019-04-29T07:00:00ZGP0|#d4fe6a3c-47a5-445e-9965-b575605eb9bd;L0|#0d4fe6a3c-47a5-445e-9965-b575605eb9bd|Issue 52;GTSet|#d14ffe11-45dc-48fb-8684-ff109cf15a74

Metro Vancouver has begun critical maintenance of the First Narrows Crossing’s north valve chamber.
