Metro Vancouver Expands Used Gypsum Disposal ProgramMetro Vancouver Expands Used Gypsum Disposal Program

Metro Vancouver residents can now safely and conveniently dispose of small quantities of used gypsum across the region.

Metro Vancouver has expanded its used gypsum disposal program to all of the region’s transfer stations, following a successful two-year pilot project at transfer stations in Maple Ridge and Langley, where residents dropped off 1,164 tonnes of used gypsum.

The program expanded to the region’s remaining three transfer stations – North Shore, Surrey, and Coquitlam – last fall, resulting in the proper disposal of more than 123 tonnes of used gypsum at all regional transfer stations since November 2018. Used gypsum is also accepted for disposal at the Vancouver Landfill in Delta.

Used gypsum may contain asbestos or be contaminated with asbestos-containing tape, paint or mud, and must be handled and disposed of with care. This program provides a safe method for residents to dispose of small quantities of used gypsum without first having it tested for asbestos.

Residents can drop off up to 10 bags of used gypsum per trip, up to five times per year. The used gypsum must be double-bagged and sealed in special clear “used gypsum program” bags, which are available at many home improvement retailers. Residents drop off the sealed bags in a separate bin, which is then sent for disposal. New, never installed, gypsum is accepted for recycling at all Metro Vancouver transfer stations.

Metro Vancouver encourages residents to test for the presence of asbestos in their home before starting any renovations. This is to protect family members and contractors from asbestos through proper remediation and removal before work begins.
