Whether it was Gerd Leonhard boldly predicting massive change, Leyla Acaroglu championing design as a disruptive force, Wayne Visser’s call to ‘close the loop’, or Arthur Huang’s ground-breaking work with upcycling, the circular economy’s potential to revolutionize the world was made clear by our keynote speakers’ inspiring stories.

The conference also included the Canadian Innovation Showcase and National Zero Waste Council Design Portfolio, which offered real world waste prevention success stories, while local profiles showcased Metro Vancouver’s zero waste innovators, and presentations from key decision-makers such as Dr. Stephen Lucas, Canada’s Deputy Minister, Environment and Climate Change Canada and the Circular Economy Leadership Coalition outlined the whole-hearted commitment we can expect from government and business as Canada adopts a circular, sustainable approach to our economy.

Food waste and ocean plastic pollution also took centre stage as TV chef Bob Blumer demonstrated how to use refrigerator cast-offs as raw materials for a delicious pizza. University of Toronto researcher Chelsea Rochman’s delivered a sobering update on micro-plastics and the state of our oceans, while Daniella Russo of Think Beyond Plastic offered a positive vision for a world where waste-free plastic use is possible. https://vimeo.com/301313778

All our presenters laid a path to a future without waste, with participants in our closing panel offering their reflections and thoughts during the wrap-up lunch to end the conference.
