Belcarra Beachkeepers bring beach to life for visitorsBelcarra Beachkeepers bring beach to life for visitors

Summertime at Belcarra Regional Park offers visitors a wealth of experiences -- from hikes to picnics, crabbing and even lessons in the marine ecosystem.

The Belcarra Beachkeepers are a group of 20 to 25 volunteers recruited every summer to educate park users about the creatures living on the beach while promoting stewardship of the marine ecosystem. The volunteers are on hand from Canada Day through the Labour Day weekend, and use interactive displays and hands-on activities to encourage low-impact exploration of the intertidal zone at Belcarra Regional Park.

A partnership between Metro Vancouver and Fisheries and Oceans Canada, the Belcarra Beachkeepers provide information to recreational crab fishers and inform the public of federal regulations regarding marine animals at the beach. They have also collected over 10 years of important scientific baseline data on Dungeness and Red Rock crab populations at the Belcarra Regional Park wharf, the only recreational crab study of its kind in BC.

Beachkeeper volunteers have the unique opportunity to participate in one of the few intertidal stewardship programs in the region. Volunteer recruitment has already begun for the 2017 season.
