National Zero Waste Council launches a National Food Waste Reduction StrategyNational Zero Waste Council launches a National Food Waste Reduction Strategy<div class="ExternalClass80080E7C26CA43A2AED1866B3C491DD1"><p>The National Zero Waste Council (NZWC) believes reducing food waste should be a priority for Canada. About a third of the food produced and distributed in Canada is not eaten and thrown away. This results in higher disposal costs for local governments and their ratepayers and higher greenhouse gas emissions all through the food value chain and from landfills. Conservative estimates of the costs of food waste is $100 billion in Canada annually. </p><p>To address this waste of resources, the Council launched a call to action - the National Food Waste Reduction Strategy - a strategy announced this November at Metro Vancouver's 2016 Zero Waste Conference. This Strategy, which takes the best of what has been developed in Europe and North America - including within the Metro Vancouver region - to address food waste, is based on three pillars: </p> <ul><li><p>Policies that support a resource efficient food system;</p></li><li><p>Actions that promote innovation; and </p></li><li><p>Behavior Change through engaging households and businesses.</p></li></ul><p>The essence of the Strategy is to change practice and techniques at key leverage points along the food supply chain – from food production through to disposal – to reduce food waste through an array of incentives, disincentives, information exchange, targeted investments and other innovative practices. To be successful, the Strategy relies on the collaboration of governments, industry and businesses, academics and researchers, and the public. </p><p>On November 4, the Council held its Annual General Meeting and welcomed new members to the Management Board - members who will guide the organization through a time of expanding horizons. Membership in the Council continues to grow including important local governments across Canada as well as large corporations and leading edge innovators.
