The Centre, a long-term vision of park partner, Kanaka Education and Environmental Partnership Society (KEEPS), will be a learning environment with indoor and outdoor space to continue fish production and expand environmental education and watershed stewardship activities.

With the rebuilt Bell-Irving Hatchery completed in 2013 as Phase 1 of the project, the Centre’s next phase will include the George Ross Learning Room, named for the generous donor who bequested Metro Vancouver Regional Parks $2.8 million. Mr. Ross’s contribution provided $300,000 towards the nature-focused learning facility. Washrooms and a separate resource building are also included in this scope of work. The Pacific Parklands Foundation has provided $200,000 towards this phase, having obtained a $100,000 grant from the Pacific Salmon Foundation, and $100,000 from the Shell ‘FuellingChange’ campaign.

Phase 3 is scheduled for construction later this year and will include a “roof-to-creek” learning landscape using on-site stormwater management as an educational, ecological and creative opportunity. The landscape design brings rainwater to the surface, exposes it and celebrates it as a natural resource. Rainwater that is captured on-site and will flow through a series of ponds and a shallow wetland improving water quality, creating aquatic habitat and providing engaging universally accessible and educational spaces. This phase has received $100,000 from the GVRD Sustainability Innovation Fund as well as an additional $25,000 from the Pacific Salmon Foundation.

http://www.metrovancouver.org/metroupdate/PublishingImages/issue21-kanakacreek.jpg2016-05-27T07:00:00ZGP0|#073170bf-6321-4af1-9a6c-77213bdeb19d;L0|#0073170bf-6321-4af1-9a6c-77213bdeb19d|Issue 21;GTSet|#d14ffe11-45dc-48fb-8684-ff109cf15a74

The Centre will provide a learning environment, with indoor and outdoor space to continue fish production and expand stewardship activities for Kanaka Creek Regional Park.

0
