Funding Update for New Waste Water Treatment Plan on the North Shore Funding Update for New Waste Water Treatment Plan on the North Shore

The March 22 release of the 2016/2017 federal budget by Finance Minister Bill Morneau contained some very good news. Our new Lions Gate Secondary Wastewater Treatment Plant was identified in the budget as "ready for immediate investment by the federal government", and $212 million has been earmarked as the federal contribution.

The existing Lions Gate Wastewater Treatment Plant has provided primary treatment for over 50 years for the residents of the District of West Vancouver, the City of North Vancouver and the District of North Vancouver. New federal regulations require that wastewater treatment on the North Shore be upgraded from primary treatment to secondary treatment by the end of 2020. This is also a deliverable in the region's Integrated Liquid Waste and Resource Management Plan.

Metro Vancouver will build a new plant in the District of North Vancouver, on Metro Vancouver owned property, approximately 2 kms east of the current site. The new facility will, among other attributes, employ best practices for wastewater treatment and resource recovery and include enhancements that benefit the environment, the local community, and the region.

Metro Vancouver is currently working with Infrastructure Canada on the process for the federal contribution, and continues to work with the Province to secure additional funding for the Lions Gate project.
