Metro Vancouver and Member Municipalities Strive for Carbon NeutralityMetro Vancouver and Member Municipalities Strive for Carbon Neutrality

The provincial funding supports regional districts and local governments in their efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and move forward on achieving their Charter goals. The program helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and create complete, compact, and energy-efficient communities.

Metro Vancouver and its member municipalities are working together to make strong progress towards their carbon neutral commitments. In fact, a number of municipalities achieved carbon neutrality in 2013 through carbon offset credits from a variety of sources, including landfill gas capture and organics diversion projects. For 2013, Metro Vancouver has reported a carbon footprint of 1300 tonnes, which represents an 80 percent reduction over the previous year.

Local government emissions, however, are a small fraction of total community emissions. Metro Vancouver and its member municipalities are proud of this progress towards carbon neutrality, and we look forward to continued leadership from local governments, institutions like schools and hospitals, business, and industry. Commitment and action from all of these sectors are needed to meet regional and provincial greenhouse gas emission reduction targets.

Our newly adopted Energy Management Policy will help us continue to make progress in reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

http://www.metrovancouver.org/metroupdate/PublishingImages/highDensity.jpg2014-10-01T07:00:00ZGP0|#e8164e0a-1e1f-4710-9084-7e828c0b1066;L0|#0e8164e0a-1e1f-4710-9084-7e828c0b1066|Issue 2;GTSet|#d14ffe11-45dc-48fb-8684-ff109cf15a74

As required by the BC Climate Action Revenue Incentive Program, Metro Vancouver has published a report summarizing the carbon footprint of our operations for 2013.

The Climate Action Revenue Incentive Program is a provincial government conditional grant program that provides rebates on carbon taxes paid to BC Climate Action Charter signatories, which includes Metro Vancouver.
