<em>Metro Vancouver 2040: Shaping Our Future</em></a><em> (Metro 2040)</em>, the regional growth strategy. They are intended to help unpack, and better understand the collective vision for how our region is going to grow over the next 25 years. </p><p>Among other initiatives,
<em>Metro 2040 </em>advocates that commercial and employment growth, including office development, be located in Urban Centres and areas with frequent transit service (frequent is defined as transit service at least every 15 minutes most of the day). Directing growth to these locations reduces vehicle commutes and employee transportation costs, protects non-urban lands for other uses, and increases the vibrancy of our Urban Centres. </p><p>The region has 74 million sq. ft. of office space in 1,332 buildings, two-thirds of which is located in Urban Centres. Half of the office space is located in Vancouver, with significant office development also located in Burnaby, New Westminster, Surrey, and Richmond. </p><p>Between 1990 and 2014, there was a total of 48 million sq. ft. of office space developed in 670 buildings in the region, which means that about 2 million sq. ft. were added per year, though there was a lull in the late 2000s and early 2010s, and then many completions between 2014 and 2016. Much of the new space is located near rapid transit stations. </p><p>This article features just some of the 24 pages of facts and information about Office Space across our region.
