Smoky skies and air quality advisories in summer 2015 Smoky skies and air quality advisories in summer 2015

This year's dry spring and summer drought led to a major wildfire season in BC and the Pacific Northwest. Three of the four air quality advisories Metro Vancouver issued this summer were directly linked to wildfire smoke - two advisories in late June (due to smog) and early July (due to wildfire smoke). In August, Metro Vancouver issued two more advisories, August 12-13 and August 23-25, when wildfire smoke impacted the Fraser Valley. Metro Vancouver issues air quality advisories for both Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley in partnership with Environment Canada, the Fraser Valley Regional District and B.C. Ministry of Environment.

Visual air quality can provide an early indication of deteriorating air quality before an advisory has been issued. Metro Vancouver and our partners recently launched a new rating system called the Visual Air Quality Rating (VAQR) which shows how air quality (as opposed to clouds, fog, rain or darkness) can impact our views of the ocean, cities and mountains. The VAQR is reported hourly for Burnaby, Pitt Meadows, Abbotsford and Chilliwack at www.clearairbc.ca/community.

In addition to www.clearairbc.ca, visit Metro Vancouver's current air quality website www.airmap.ca to check the air quality readings at 28 monitoring stations.

http://www.metrovancouver.org/metroupdate/PublishingImages/issue37-clearair.jpg2015-09-30T07:00:00ZGP0|#d4dd73f1-fbe7-492c-8314-7ee9fb4f0386;L0|#0d4dd73f1-fbe7-492c-8314-7ee9fb4f0386|Issue 13;GTSet|#d14ffe11-45dc-48fb-8684-ff109cf15a74

‚ÄčMetro Vancouver issues air quality advisories for both Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley in partnership with Environment Canada, the Fraser Valley Regional District and B.C.
