Port Mann Water Supply Tunnel – tunnelling process now completePort Mann Water Supply Tunnel – tunnelling process now complete

The Port Mann Water Supply Tunnel was excavated by a tunnel boring machine, similar to the machinery used to build Metro Vancouver's own recently commissioned twin water tunnels on the North Shore, and the tunnelling process for the Canada Line. For world travellers, similar machinery was used for the UK-France Channel Tunnel (the Chunnel).

The new tunnel under the Fraser River is 30 metres below the deepest portion of the river bed, seismically resistant, and represents an amazing engineering feet due to the high pressures involved. The tunnel boring machine began its journey under the Fraser River in February 2014, and finished in mid-July.

Although the tunnel itself is complete, construction continues for the associated valve chambers, welded steel water main and other infrastructure required to bring safe, clean drinking water to our homes and businesses.
