Northwest Langley Wastewater Treatment Plant Expansion Northwest Langley Wastewater Treatment Plant Expansion

Construction for the plant expansion started early this year, is now 10 percent complete, and is expected to be in full operation by late 2015. The three new secondary clarifiers and ancillary equipment, including a new activated sludge tank and trickling filter effluent pump station, will ensure that the plant consistently discharges high-quality effluent in compliance with the Operational Certificate issued by the BC Ministry of Environment. All foundations and structures will be seismically resistant, and designed and constructed to meet the latest building codes.

The plant will meet the requirements of the Canada-wide Strategy for the Management of Municipal Wastewater Effluent, and will also contribute to multiple strategic objectives in Metro Vancouver’s Integrated Liquid Waste and Resource Management Plan and Board Strategic Plan. The expansion will ensure the treatment plant continues to provide sustainable regional benefits for the Fraser Sewerage Area such as:

New technology to enhance the protection of public health.

Safeguarding nearby and downstream ecosystems by ensuring the plant’s treated effluent meets or exceeds all mandated regulatory standards.

New infrastructure to accommodate changing climatic conditions.

http://www.metrovancouver.org/metroupdate/PublishingImages/NorthwestLangleyWWTP.png2014-09-01T07:00:00ZGP0|#a034b42c-1781-40ae-b748-435ae38ef7b4;L0|#0a034b42c-1781-40ae-b748-435ae38ef7b4|Issue 1;GTSet|#d14ffe11-45dc-48fb-8684-ff109cf15a74

The $64-million infrastructure expansion project at the Northwest Langley Wastewater Treatment Plant will accommodate the projected population growth in the Langley area, and provide enhanced environmental protection for the Fraser River. The plant’s treatment capacity will be expanded with the addition of three new state-of-the-art secondary clarifiers, which move settled sludge to a digester where microorganisms break down organic materials from wastewater.
