Starting a new hobby with a loved one, re-gifting a favourite novel or board game, giving gifts that last or taking a hungry student grocery shopping are just a few of the ideas being offered as part of Metro Vancouver’s Create Memories, Not Garbage holiday campaign that runs until January 1.Metro Vancouver is encouraging residents to do just one thing differently to minimize waste this Christmas with the help of a brand new website,, which provides holiday décor tips, printable gift cards and gift ideas that will generate less waste.For the sixth year, Metro Vancouver is promoting the idea of creating memories by giving reusable items, experiences and high quality gifts during the holiday season.“This isn’t an anti-shopping campaign but rather an effort to get people to think differently when giving gifts this Christmas,” said Malcolm Brodie, Chair of Metro Vancouver’s Zero Waste Committee. “By giving experiences or high quality gifts, Metro Vancouver residents can help the region reach its waste reduction goals while still celebrating the spirit of the season.”Canadians produce the most garbage per capita when compared with 16 other OECD nations, and the region is projected to grow by one million people by 2040. During the past six years of the Create Memories, Not Garbage campaign the amount of waste disposed of in the days following December 25th has decreased by an average of 6% per year.Metro residents are being asked to share their tips for celebrating with less waste through social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, using #CreateMemoriesNotGarbage. For many people, favourite holiday memories are about shared experiences rather than the stuff they received. As part of this year’s campaign creative, Metro Vancouver employees share their favourite holiday memories and their best gift ever.“Every year it is great to see that more people are becoming aware of the campaign, and most importantly that it influences their gift giving,” said Board Chair Greg Moore. “Thoughtful gift giving can dramatically reduce the amount of packaging and wrapping that accumulates and it can allow opportunities for individuals to create new holiday traditions.”The campaign will run on bus shelters and at public transit facilities across the region as well as in social media, online and on TV.
