When asked, most of us don’t think we have hazardous wastes in our home. But we do. Paint, cleansers, corrosive products…these are all hazardous materials that can corrode sewer pipes, impact the environment and are dangerous to people and pets. With about half the HHW’s used in the region coming from our homes many of these are items we use every day including:
- Solvents
- Oil
- Pesticides
- Paints
- Cleansers used around the house
If you must use these products, limit the amount you buy, properly store what you don't use, and dispose of leftovers appropriately. These – and various other similar materials – are banned from disposal in landfills and create environmental and public health hazards if they aren't correctly disposed of. They should neither be poured down the drain, nor put in the garbage.
